Learn a simple way of getting higher on-page SEO scores by learning how to SEO optimize wordpress.
How To SEO WordPress For Higher Rankings
Let me first give You an overview over the on page SEO factors which WordPress is not making good use of. I will then show You a way to tweak WordPress for more search engine friendly output and how to use WordPress SEO plug-ins to optimize your blog.
- Powerful on page SEO factors to optimize in WordPress
- WordPress won’t be using SEO friendly web addresses for Your post pages.
- WordPress will not build SEO friendly page titles.
- Default WordPress blog settings create a lot of duplicate pages to be indexed
A good starting point is building upon a SEO optimized theme. A good theme must not have a H1 headings in the header and should only use H4 headings in the Side-Bar. This way the search engines can only find H1 and H2 and H3 headings in Your content and that these will have Your main keywords in them. On poorly optimized themes You will even find H1 or H2 headings in the sidebar, leading to Google considering that Your site is about “Subscribe to this blog” or “MY BLOGROLL” or whatever You find in the headlines of sidebar items. Don’t worry. You can download free SEO optimized themes on a lot of sites. Here’s a good one. WordPress also has a theme collection with some SEO friendly Themes here.
How To SEO WordPress – Tweaks For Better On Page SEO
Get started by improving the permalink Structure of WordPress. WordPress otherwise will generate Your blog post on a website with a Web Address that looks somehow like: http://www.YourWordpressBlog.com/?p=1836 A standard blog installation will add only a unique number to Your home page URL. This generates a short web address but is far from SEO friendly. As one powerful on page factor is the Domain name and the URL You must insert Your most relevant Keywords in the URL. Go to the WordPress admin and open “settings” from the menu on the left. Open “permalink” in the settings menu. Check the Check-box next to “Custom Structure” and insert /%post_title%/ in the input box of the custom structure. This change tells WordPress to generate the web address of the pages by adding the title of each post to the home address. http://www.YourWordPressBlog.com/post-title-Here You now have Your most relevant keyphrase into the URL of the post page, as You should always be using Your most relevant keyword Phrase as Your post title.
The same applies to the page titles that WordPress creates by default. Default setting is to use the blogs’ name and then append the post or page title. Leads to handy URLs but has no SEO value. It’s better to only use the post title to ensure that the page title will always be relevant to the content on each single page. You also get rid of an element that is the same on every page by removing the blog name. Changing the titles is best done with a SEO plug-in for WordPress. A good one is All In One SEO Pack. Once installed You find All In One SEO Pack under settings. All In One SEO can control titles, descriptions and keywords for all pages. The plug-in also holds the presets for page titles. Delete the %blog_title% tag from the first 3 entries to optimize the page titles.
How To SEO WordPress With Plug-Ins
The All In One SEO Pack also gives You full control over another onpage factor of your blog that will hurt Your rankings. WordPress organizes content in categories, tags and an author archive on multi author blogs. The result is a lot of different sites with duplicate content, especially when a blog is new and has few post that share tags or categories. Search Engines don’t like pages with duplicate content though. The plug-in enables us to control which pages the engines index. This way the spiders will still crawl these sites and find all your pages. But only one appearance of Your content will be indexed without any duplicate content penalty.
