“A very real risk of people trying to get hold of very sensitive data, disrupt businesses,” Fathers says. “It’s something we spend a lot of our time helping our clients investigate this type of attack.”

Experts at Washington University say the sophistication of defenses provided by companies like Savvis make it almost impossible for the hackers to shut down.

“It’s really more of a PR campaign, Wash-U Professor Patrick Crowley says. “It’s not a serious threat to any infrastructure.”

There are two types of attacks underway. The larger number, coming from a program that has been downloaded some 40-thousand times in recent days, is called a denial of service attack.

“Imagine if you yourself could open up a million browsers and direct them all to the same web page,” Crowley explains. “That would create an enormous amount of requests for that web page and sometimes the servers can’t keep up.”

Those, he says, are easier to defend for the big companies.

The second type of attack is called malware. It’s an attempt to take over corporate servers according to Fathers at Savvis. Hackers attempt to take over accounting data bases and spend away the company’s money. He says companies can fight these off with strong defenses.

“You’ve got to invest and become more sophisticated. These are obviously very sophisticated attackers who know what they’re doing.”
