See if you can relate to the following statements. If you want something in life you are going to have to work for it. If you find a good company and work for them the next 30 or 40 years your future will be secure. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. These are just some of the statements I heard growing up. In all of my working years I have probably asked the same questions a lot of other people ask. Isn’t there a better way to support my family yet still have some extra time to invest in them? Why couldn’t I have been born rich and not so good looking? Why does it always seem to work for the other guy?
In February of 2009 I retired from FedEx even though it wasn’t actually tim to do so age wise. While with FedEx I had quite a bit of responsibility because I owned the route and two trucks. My responsibility was much greater than punching the clock then making my deliveries and then punching the old time clock to go home. If you will pardon the cliche’ for the past 18 and a half years I felt that I was literally married to those two trucks. The previous 18 and a half years I worked in the same industry but it was for the company and not as an independent contractor. After 37 years of jumping on and off trucks I reflected back and I realized that I had missed a lot of opportunities in the lives of my children as they were growing up.
As it is in the case of other families it was mom who went to the choir concerts in the middle of the day. It was mom who saw the track meets. It was mom who saw the band concerts unless they happened to be later in the evening. I am not looking for sympathy here because we really do have a close knit family but I had come to the conclusion that maybe things could have been somewhat different. Life really is too short to get so busy that we miss out on one of our greatest assets. Your family is truly that.
I saw the same pattern happening with the five beautiful grandchildren we have now been blessed with. I was not going to let history repeat itself. I was determined to rectify the situation. I came to a point of being fed up enough that I sold the route and the two trucks and I began a search for a program on the internet that would make me a work at home grandpa. I needed something that could generate a significant income yet I could still have the time to devote to the special activities that my grandchildren are involved in. After testing several programs I have found one that can fulfill my needs and I am now running my own home-based internet business that has the potential to do great things financially. Better yet is the fact that it affords me the time to attend some of those special events that I previously had missed.
I had the opportunity to see my little granddaughter graduate from preschool even when it happened to be a morning affair. I have had the privilege of spending an entire morning at my grandson’s field day and seeing him compete in all of the events. I have been to every one of their band concerts. Thanks to the program I found I can now set my own schedule to revolve around one of my greatest assets and truly say life has become a lot more balanced. Life is good.
