Beyond begging to be on your best friend’s blog roll, there is a more potentially profitable way to built strong relationships and enhance the presence of your blog.

Affiliate programs have been around since the 1990′s and have become more sophisticated in the past few years. An affiliate is a person or entity that owns a website or blog and basically provides a contextually based vehicle for a merchant to advertise their products or services. In other words, as an affiliate, you’ll legitimately partner with big name merchants who want you to help them find customers by adding their ads to your site. The advertising supplied by the merchant basically invites your site’s visitors to ‘click-through’ to the merchant’s site and buy something.

The merchant’s HTML code defines the advertising copy and the appropriate link to the merchant’s website. It also contains an affiliate account number to identify your blog as the source of a ‘click-through’ to the merchant’s site. Each time your blog sends a lead to the merchant’s site your affiliate code is activated and signals the exact location of where the ‘clicked-through’ lead came from. You get paid when a person visiting your blog clicks on a merchant’s ad and subsequently purchases a product or service from a merchant to whom you’re an affiliate.

You have the potential to receive a percentage of the total transaction. Percentages can range as high as 30% or more! Some merchants typically run incentive programs for their affiliates who participate in ad campaigns targeting promotional products for a specified period of time.

The most successful affiliates are those who attract high levels of traffic to their sites. Becoming an affiliate is a fairly simple process, however with the dramatic growth of website ownership over the past few years, merchants can and are, becoming much more selective of who they bestow affiliate status to.

As an affiliate, your site becomes an extension of the merchant’s advertising strategy. As an affiliate, the merchant truly wishes that your site becomes a top-ranking producer. Everyone in the game wants you to succeed and succeed big! The more people visiting your site the greater the chances are that they will ‘click-through’ to the merchant’s site. The more times your site’s pages are viewed with the merchant’s advertising, higher numbers of ‘impressions’ are cast in front of a pre-qualified audience.

Having your affiliate status revoked may seem harsh. But put yourself in the merchant’s shoes. When a merchant approves your blog into one of their affiliate programs they must be cautious. Your blog is basically playing host to the merchant’s brand and the merchant is essentially providing your blog with a soft third party endorsement by allowing their brand to exist on your blog-site.

For example, let’s say you are specializing in personal technology. Adding a Microsoft or Apple display ad to your site can greatly enhance your authority and presence. Visitors to your site see that large corporations are allowing you to display their brand on your website which adds credibility to who you are and what you do! Choosing a creative format for displaying affiliate ads is also a sign that you have developed a sophisticated approach toward your subject matter versus slapping an ad into a space that may look awkward just because it may happen to fit. Take great care in how you choose to promote the merchants who have taken a risk with you as an affiliate. Never hesitate to reach out and contact the merchant’s affiliate contact. Building a relationship with your merchants is an excellent way to add traffic to your site and gain respect as an affiliate.

Whether you become an affiliate to individual merchants or through large affiliate programs, such as the Commission Junction or Linkshare platforms, you must conform to the Terms and Conditions set forth in the affiliate agreement and apply due diligence in maintaining a site that places the merchant and their ads in a positive light.
