Shared hosting is the most widely used method for web hosting. A company sets up one or more servers to be used for Web Hosting, and their customers in turn pay for a portion of that server and share it with other customers. So a server may be responsible for several hundred web sites at a time.

Shared Hosting has many advantages. First of all, it is truly the most inexpensive route for commercial hosting as the numerous customers who are able to use it can easily offset the monthly cost of the server. They don’t require advanced technical knowledge to use and you only need to administer your account – at no point do you have anything to do with the server. You get access to uptime guarantees, customer and technical service, and a contract, because it is a paid for solution.

The disadvantage is that, as you are sharing a server with other customers, you are also sharing the resources of that server. Keep in mind a server, like your PC at home, has a limited amount of CPU, memory, and disk space available and if the Web Host has too many folks on the server, or it’s being used heavily by some customers, or if the server isn’t that fast to start with – you might find yourself frustrated when your website seems to be slow.

Furthermore, Shared Hosting will not permit much in the way of sophisticated, potent features which the more expensive choices offer to you, you will also discover. You must also face the possibility of heightened security risks, as your fellow server users might not be using safe web practices. The server itself will usually employ its own type of security, so this is not an issue which should be overly concerning.

For the majority of users and websites, Shared Hosting is the perfect answer to the needs. Unless you are an individual who has a specific need to have dominion over an entire server and control its operation, there are very few exceptions to the effectiveness of shared hosting.
